Promess Introduces H-Series: Intrinsically Safe, C2D1-Rated, Fully Programmable Electric Press Solutions for Hazardous Manufacturing Environments
Brighton, MI – Promess, a global leader in intelligent assembly and test systems, is proud to announce the launch of its H-Series, a groundbreaking line of intrinsically safe, Class 2, Division 1 (C2D1) rated, fully electric presses engineered for hazardous, cleanroom, and food-grade manufacturing environments.
Building on decades of expertise in servo-controlled pressing, Promess designed the H-Series specifically for applications involving energetic or combustible materials, where safety and precision are equally critical. Unlike hydraulic presses, which lack the same level of feedback and control, the H-Series servo-electric design minimizes risk by eliminating uncontrolled overpressure—a critical concern when compacting explosive powders or assembling charge devices.

Applications include:
- Nuclear fuel compaction
- Ordnance charge assembly
- Ordnance fuse assembly
- Primer assembly
- Pyrotechnics assembly (fireworks, flares)
- Charges for fracking
- Powder compaction
- Press fit, staking, crimping, forming, riveting, and more
“Many of these processes have traditionally been performed with hydraulic presses, which inherently carry higher risks due to limited feedback,” said John Lytle, President of Promess. “With the H-Series, manufacturers can now press sensitive and hazardous materials with the highest levels of safety, precision, and process control.”
What makes the H-Series Intrinsically Safe?
The H-Series press incorporates multiple design features that limit the potential for ignition in hazardous environments. Key elements include:
- Specially designed components, including the electric motor, that ensure electrical and thermal energy remain below ignition thresholds.
- Intrinsic safety barriers that strictly limit voltage and current to levels incapable of causing a spark or explosion.
- Sealed construction and system adaptations tailored for dust and volatile environments.
By combining intrinsic safety with closed-loop programmability, the H-Series provides unmatched control. Operators can program movement based on position, force, or external sensor input, while integrated signature monitoring, data acquisition, and storage ensure every cycle is verified and traceable.
Available as a standalone servo-electric press or a fully integrated turnkey station, the H-Series offers force capabilities from 10 kN to above 500 kN, making it flexible for both small-scale and heavy-duty hazardous applications.
The H-Series is ideally suited for industries including defense, chemical, medical, energy, and aerospace, where intrinsically safe and highly accurate manufacturing solutions are required.
