Gun Barrel Application
Challenge
The customer faced a highly manual and operator-dependent process for mounting the rifle barrel to the receiver assembly. This not only introduced variability for over/under torquing and the potential for misalignment but also lacked any form of data collection or process validation. A critical aspect of the assembly involved aligning the receiver precisely with the dovetail feature on the gun barrel—something that relied heavily on the skill and judgment of the operator. This posed quality risks and made it difficult to scale or standardize the process.
Solution
Promess implemented a 200 Nm TorquePRO to automate the insertion of the barrel into the receiver. The primary requirement is that the dovetail cut in the barrel—where the front sight is mounted—is precisely aligned with the rear sight on the receiver. This alignment is critical to ensure sight accuracy. Additionally, we are able to monitor and confirm that the barrel torque remains within the specified range. This intelligent control loop not only ensured accurate alignment but also removed the need for visual confirmation or manual adjustment.

Results
By integrating the 200 Nm TorquePRO and UltraPRO controller, the customer successfully transitioned from a manual to a fully automated assembly process. Enhanced the alignment accuracy between the barrel and the receiver, while ensuring the barrel was torqued to specified standards. The UltraPRO’s ability to handle multiple sensor inputs simplified the station design and reduced integration complexity—a major factor in the customer’s decision to choose Promess. Additionally, the system now collects torque and angle data for every assembly, providing traceable quality metrics that feed directly into the customer’s quality management system. This has enhanced their ability to monitor production, identify trends, and ensure every assembly meets strict performance standards.
