What Is the Cartridge?
If you spend any time around the new Promess M-Series Press System, one component comes up in nearly every conversation: the Cartridge.
It’s the application-specific mechanic that attaches to the powerhead. It replaces what used to be the presshead assembly on traditional servo press platforms. But describing the Cartridge as “the new presshead” undersells what it actually is.
The Cartridge is a smart device. And it’s the reason the M-Series can do things that previous-generation press platforms couldn’t.
What Lives Inside the Cartridge
A traditional press operation requires a load cell, a preamplifier to process the load cell signal, calibration records to convert raw signals into accurate force readings, and configuration information specific to that application. On previous-generation platforms, those components and records lived in different places: on the press, in a separate panel, in a documentation file, in an engineer’s head.
On the M-Series, all of it lives inside the Cartridge:
- The load cell, integrated into the Cartridge mechanic
- The preamplifier, built directly into the Cartridge, eliminating external wiring that was previously required
- Calibration data for the load cell and all sensing components in that Cartridge
- Configuration information specific to that application
The Cartridge feeds the processed load cell signal up into the powerhead with only two connections back to the controls. That single change is part of what allows a complete M-Series installation to use fewer than five cables, down from the 12 to 17 cables typical on previous-generation systems.
Self-Configuring Recovery
Because the Cartridge stores its own calibration and configuration data, the system handles component swaps differently than traditional press platforms.
When a Cartridge is replaced, whether for routine maintenance, an application change, or to recover from a problem, the system self-recognizes the new Cartridge. It reads the stored data. It uses the calibration and configuration information from the remaining components to bring everything back to a known-good state.
No manual recalibration. No re-entering configuration parameters. No engineer required to validate the system before it goes back into production.
For an automotive supplier running 20 Promess systems on a line, this is the difference between a 30-minute Cartridge swap and a half-day engineering event. For a medical device manufacturer under FDA-validated production, it’s the difference between a controlled component change and a re-validation cycle.
